Amorous

A Documentary Exploration of Love and Relationships in the 21st Century

What is Polyamory?

Polyamory is the practice of having more than one open romantic and/or sexual relationship at a time. "Polyamory is the non-possessive, honest, responsible, and ethical philosophy and practice of loving multiple people simultaneously," according to the Polyamory Society, a nonprofit organization which promotes and supports the interest of individuals of multipartner relationships and families. "Polyamory emphasizes consciously choosing how many partners one wishes to be involved with rather than accepting social norms which dictate loving only one person at a time."

Polyamory is also on the rise in the United States - both in terms of practice and cultural exposure. It’s tough to gauge the numbers, but it’s currently estimated that 4 to 5 percent of people living in the United States are polyamorous—or participating in other forms of open relationships—and 20 percent of people have at least attempted some kind of open relationship at some point in their lives.

Our Audience

This documentary will appeal to anyone interested in broadening their own understanding of human commitment, intimacy, and love - both people practicing polyamory and anyone curious in seeing how some individuals are living polyamorous lives. We especially hope this film will appeal to Gen Z’ers who are curious to learn more about their heritage as a queer polyamorous people and those that came before them.

Our
Mission

Although both interest and practice in polyamory continues to grow, media representation in film and television continues to lag unfortunately far behind. We believe it is vital to capture and preserve this moment in queer and polyamorous history by providing an empathetic and engaging window into a community not often seen. The Polyam community is an essential part of the wider tapestry of cultural liberation from patriarchy and white supremacy.

The vision

The subjects of our film are represented with minimal interference to highlight nuance and capture true-to-life moments. Our film will primarily employ an observational, fly-on-the-wall approach to follow our subjects as they move throughout daily life. Our goal is to be as unobtrusive as possible in order to capture subjects in a raw, unguarded state. There are many patterns and fractals in nature and in polyamory that mirror each other. We will capture these natural visualizations to aid in explaining polyamory. For example, many rivers flowing into a delta might symbolize a network of relationships coming together into a bigger pool. Fire itself is a great metaphor for polyamorous love, as it can be shared and given away infinitely without diminishing its source. We will weave these visuals into our story as we jump between scenes and interviews with our subjects. Our documentary is an overdue piece of visual media on an underrepresented, incredibly diverse group of people practicing an often-misunderstood lifestyle.
